About Japan 21

Japan 21 was formed in December 2002 from the merger of the Japan Festival Fund and Japan Festival Education Trust (JFET), both of which originated in the Japan Festival 1991. Over a ten year period, the two organisations had operated side-by-side working to further understanding of Japan in the UK: the Festival Fund through the annual Japan Festival Awards, which recognised outstanding achievements in introducing Japanese culture; and JFET, through its support of schools teaching about Japan.

A decade on from the Japan Festival 1991, the 2000 events which made up Japan 2001 amply illustrated the current breadth and depth of British associations with Japan. The roles of the Festival Fund and JFET were reassessed and Japan 21 was created - a cultural organisation designed to meet 21st century needs in strengthening ties between Japan and the UK.

Japan 21 is a registered charity and is registered as a company limited by guarantee in England and Wales.
