At the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a branch of the British Haiku Society put up a Haiku workshop for children targetted at age 10-12. Haiku games and performances were on show, and to top it off there was even an interview from Festival Radio.

People from the Chiba University School of Nursing held a seminar in which participants were given an overview of health care for older people in Japan including health policy, the long-term care insurance system, and home care nursing in Japan.

Japanese Speech Contest

The second annual speech contest for secondary pupils learning Japanese in the UK was held at the Embassy of Japan. Finalists in Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 gave original speeches in Japanese on the theme Friends in front of an audience of fellow pupils, teachers, parents and invited guests from the UK-Japan and educational fields.

The school ran a ten-week course to introduce Japanese language and culture as part of its Family Learning Programme. The course proved very popular among the fifteen who attended.

A weekly lunchtime club was set up for pupils interested in learning Japanese and working towards the WJEC Level 1 Certificate. Due to the popularity of the club, it has been extended from one to two weekly sessions and a new beginners' course was established in January 2005.

Visits are offered to primary schools studying Japan, giving children an introduction to origami, calligraphy language, costume, daily life and food.

The school has developed a practical exercise booklet for KS3 learners of Japanese in the UK and a CD to support the teaching of WJEC Level 1 Certificate for Japanese. Although initially designed for in-house use, the workbook and CD have the potential for wider dissemination in the future.

Summer 2003
Y6 pupils studied aspects of Japanese culture and history as part of a curriculum initiative to enrich their knowledge and understanding through the arts. Pupils engaged in a term's work with input from staff and visitors, culminating in a 3-day taiko workshop and pupil performances.
