Kyogen Plays
University of Oxford Oriental Insitiute
January - March 2008
Students of Japanese studies at the University of Oxford were under the direction of Professor Masaru Sekine to perform Kyogen plays. After the performances Professor Masaru Sekine gave open lectures to all members of the public.
Shadows Meet Bunraku
Funny Wonders
June - November 2007
At Buxton puppet festival, bunraku puppetiers and shadow puppet artists worked together to create a unique performance. The success at the festival lead to a performance in Sapporo where the bunraku co-artists came from. The project proved to be a valuable experience for both communities in terms of the arts and cultural exchange.

Homeless and ex-homeless artists were brought together in a world festival to celebrate and share each other's art works. Five guests from Japan came to participate in the London part festival including the performance troupe Musubi, film maker Iida Motoharu and the artist cafe Enoa Ru founder from Yoyogi park.

A theatre performance was held for 3 - 5 year olds and their families, telling the tale of the Legend of Tanabata. Children were given coloured paper to hang on a tree with their wish written on it as is traditionally done in Japan on 7th July.
UK-Japan Music Society
15th Anniversary Christmas Concert: Handel's Messiah December 2006
To celebrate their 15th anniversary, the Society performed Handel's Messiah, as this piece was the first one to be performed by the Society back in 1992. The concert featured the UK-Japan Choir and international soloists from both countries.

Composition Vol. 5 December 2006
An evening of original music by young composers from both Japan and the UK took place at The Warehouse. Two children (age 8 and 9) performed their first compositions.

East to West - Forest Exhibition September - October 2006
International artists' works were shown in the Brewery. Japan 21's support was for workshops by Kae Kawai, one of the featured artists.
The Other Opera
Two Sisters, A Rose, A Flood and Snow - Four Tales of Enchantment June - July 2006
Both adult and youth choirs worked together with the London Symphony Orchestra to support a production of "Four Tales of Enchantment". The children in the choir were introduced to the two Japanese tales used in the piece. They were explored them in their historical content and discovered how the original story inspired both the author and the composer of Four Tales.

Asia House
Celebrate! (An Educational Exhibition) June - August 2006
School groups, families and the wider public were able to access and enjoy the exhibition. It explored selected Asian celebrations through photos, films and artefacts. Kite making and origami workshops took place.
Playbox Theatre Company
Haito The Tree Wizard March 2006
"Haito The Tree Wizard" is a magical play for the under ten's based on the Japanese folk tale "The Man Who Made Trees Blossom". The interactive production involved the children a lot - in the first part of the programme they learned some basic Japanese words, made origami and hug wishes onto a Sakura tree. During the second half of the play the Japanese words and the produced origami were used in the performance.

Japanese Storytelling Presentation February - March 2006
The KS2 children worked together for a month to prepare two plays based on Japanese stories. They were transposed into puppet theatre and dance drama, and were performed for the community at the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend.

Year 5 followed up a term's project on Japan, with a trip to the Royal Armouries to find out more about Japanese history.

Gigei organised an interactive exhibition of Japanese arts and culture at the Solihull Arts Complex Community Gallery. The Japan Day consisted of a range of work by ten British and Japanese artists and visitors were also able to participate in cultural workshops and enjoy live performances.

UK-Japan Music Society
Requiem Concert May 2004
The UK-Japan Music Society held a Requiem concert dedicated to the late Ambassador Oku, who was killed in Iraq on 29 November 2003. The choir, made up of Japanese and British singers, performed John Rutter's Requiem at the concert held at St John's Wood Church.

The Come Closer project by Toshie Ise and Miho Suganami aims to create barrier-free occasions where art is enjoyed by everyone. Come Closer III
was an exhibition to be touched, operated and entered - the spectator being a vital part, without whom it is not complete.
Kenji Yoshida
La Vie October 2003
An exhibition of the work of Kenji Yoshida was held at Canterbury Cathedral as part of the 2003 Canterbury Festival. In World War II, Mr Yoshida was selected as a kamikaze pilot,
but the war ended before his turn came. Surrounded by pain and destruction, he decided to devote his life to a celebration of humanity through art. His installation proved
an exquisitely beautiful and tranquil area in which to reflect on these themes.
