"What do you like about JAPAN "- a children's poster competition
July 2007
A 3 day event for a group of 21 children aged between 8-12. The first day involved a visit to the Japanese Galleries at the British Museum followed by a Japanese lunch at the Zen Garden at SOAS. On the second day, a Zen meditation session took place, followed by group activity work creating posters. These posters were exhibited on the last day, with prizes and certificates handed out to the young participants.

Japanese Printmaking for Secondary Schools

Four courses involved 55 students from schools in the London area. Each course ran for 3-4 hours and students were absorbed in the process of designing their own print, then carving and printing it. more >>

Tanabata Festival Family Workshop
August 2004
A half day workshop for families with children. Participants are introduced to the story of tanabata and create their own decorations to hang on branches of bamboo in the Museum.

Diverse Designs
October - December 2003
The Museum involved local schools in creating designs inspired by its foreign collection, through a series of talks and workshops including Japanese printing workshops. The results were exhibited at the Museum in April 2004.

Japanese Fan Day
August 2003
A drop-in family workshop for parents and children was held to coincide with a special exhibition of Japanese fans and paintings in the Japanese Galleries. Inspired by these, over 150 participants drew and painted fans under the direction of a Japanese artist and volunteers.

Touring Mackintosh Tearoom
September - November 2003
A tearoom kit travelled to rural communities in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, with children working with designers to create a tearoom interior. The influence of Japanese architecture and design on Mackintosh's work was explored through the tearoom designs.
