The Art of Shogi
Akiko Yanagisawa [mu:]
The event by the Japan Shogi Association was the first one to be organised outside of Japan. Shogi (Japanese chess) was presented at three venues - at two schools and at the Asia House.
Shoji Segawa first presented the background and history of Shogi, followed by an explanation of the game and the rules. At the end the workshops participants played shogi games with the visiting professional players.
The participants of the workshop not only learned the rules of shogi and the fun it provides, they also learned a lot about the Japanese cultural value reflected in shogi - for example the importance of respect to your opponent.
The schools were given Shogi sets and at Roding Valley School a shogi club has since started.
