Touring Mackintosh Tearoom
In this project by The Lighthouse, Glasgow, the influence of Japanese architecture and design on
Mackintosh's work was explored through tearoom designs. A tearoom kit travelled to rural
communities in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, where primary school children
designed and made a tearoom. They then invited friends and family to an opening at which they
served tea and cakes.
In creating their tearooms, children worked on a number of projects, including designing and making
cardboard furniture, decorative paper panels and lighting. They also documented the development of the
tearoom by taking photographs and making a video.
