British Sign Language Haiku Festival July 2006
A 2 day workshop that helped encourage deaf British people to create Haiku in British sign language. A competition took place on the last day and performing participants received prizes.

Tsumiki Workshops May 2006
Workshops held over five days at primary schools in the London area introduced children to the world of tsumiki (building blocks). Carpenter Masayuki Ogino, who designed these tsumiki, and his family helped children from 5-12 unleash their creativity.
Mugen Taiko Dojo
Taiko workshop and performance April 2006
Led by Katsuji Kondo, an open workshop for beginners as well as a workshop for experienced players took place. Katsuji Kondo also performed in Glasgow and in Edinburgh. The performance included shamisen music and a Shinto blessing.

Japanese Workshop February 2006
The children of the Drama Club enjoyed making kites, doing origami. and meeting with Japanese students. Drama activities covered traditions like Shinto, Buddhism, sumo and the samurai. They incorporated Japanese stories and music.
Visual Learning Foundation
The Japanese Garden - Autumn Screens October 2005
A one-day practical art and design course for primary teachers linked to the Japanese Garden at the Royal Botanic Garden. The teachers got more confident in sumi-e ink drawing and they were shown how they could introduce their students to Japan through art.
Clifton Scientific Trust
UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop July - August 2005
Post-16 students from the UK and Japan worked on real-life science-related projects. Projects related to nanotechnology, climate change, global monitoring by satellite and clock-gene research as well as to water resources in the third world. The students gave a public presentation of their achievements.

Asian Music Circuit Japanese music summer school August 2005
The summer school offered three days of expert tuition, including masterclasses on the shinobue bamboo flute and taiko drums.
Buxton Puppet Festival
A celebration of Japanese puppetry July 2005
Puppeteer Nori Sawa was invited to the Festival for the third year to work with adults and children. The Sapporo-based children's puppet group, Yamabiko-za also visited and performed.

A two day kitemaking workshop with Elaine Cooper was organised for Year 9 students who had already studied Japan in geography.

Wem Taiko Rangers January - August 2005
The school is developing two performing groups for taiko drumming, one for the 16-19 category and another for the 11-16 age range. The aim of the project is to develop the groups as performers and educators with expert guidance from James Barrow.
Takumasa Ono
Young Britain and Sumi-e: Japanese painting by British children March - October 2005
Sumi-e workshops are being run by artist Takumasa Ono at primary schools in England and Wales. The workshops, which allow British children to create their own artworks, were originally developed in connection with the HENRO exhibition which was held at National Trust properties in 2001.
British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild
Buxton Festival of Puppetry 2003, 2004 & 2005
Japanese puppeteer, Noriyuki Sawa, has been a participant at the Festival over the past three years to conduct workshops providing an 'Introduction to Bunraku' to professional puppeteers in the UK. Evening performances were open to the general public.
Events have been very well received, with participants comments including 'more than great, inspirational', 'some thoughts which will stay with me for a long time' and 'fantastic, informative and enjoyable'.

Twenty half-day artist-led workshops for school children and young people were held at the Serpentine Gallery as part of an integrated education and access programme accompanying the presentation of new work by contemporary Japanese artist, Tomoko Takahashi.

A two part celebration of how Japanese comics are created and published. Japanese manga talents from Tokyo and London discussed their work in open conversation, followed the next day by a Manga Masterclass, with a series of live demonstrations and lessons.

Hanayui, from Kodo March 2004
Hanayui, performing Japanese folk dance, song and taiko, toured to venues in the UK for two weeks, visiting Edinburgh, Exeter and London.
The tour included public workshops, collaborative public performances with UK taiko groups, and programme development sessions.

Keele Concerts Society
Taiko drumming workshops February 2004
Children from 18 primary and secondary schools took part in a series of taiko workshops by Mugenkyo. In each, a brief history of the cultural background of taiko was followed by a demonstration and practical workshop. A performance by Mugenkyo at the end of the two week residency was attended by many of the young people who attended workshops.

Over a two-day period 240, Y8 pupils took part in taiko workshops and participated in performances. For many it was their first contact with Japanese drums - in some cases, of Japanese culture itself. They learnt basic taiko rhythmic patterns, which they incorporated into their own compositions.

Y10 pupils presented work created in textiles, food technology and graphics. Japanese inspired artefacts were displayed and kimono worn as pupils served Japanese food made themselves.

The school developed on the interest arising from previous taiko workshops, by giving pupils in Y5 & 6 the chance to participate in a series of six taiko workshops held over a whole half term. This enabled the school to integrate the content of the workshops with the National Curriculum requirements.

Children participated in 3 days of participatory workshops including taiko, printing, fan making, language lessons, music, calligraphy and food. The school benefitted from links to the wider community through visits and talks by local Japanese residents and language teachers from London. Parents worked as volunteers and became interested in the project as a whole.
