Toilets

As Japan has a very health concious society, several advancements have been made in health and hygene. One of the most notable being the improvement of the toilet. Though there are toilets that are very much like ones that we use in the west, you may come across some with very drastic changes if you were to visit Japan.

From a distance this may seem like an ordinary toilet, but under closer inspection you will notice that there is an arm on the side with several buttons. The buttons on the arm have several functions which may seem very peculiar to those who are not so familiar.

At a touch of a button, you can clean your posterior with a squirter that shoots out water, or heat the toilet seat for added comfort. Looking closely at the control arm, you can see that the buttons have neat diagrams and labels to help you.

Most hotels have instructions clearly displayed in English as well as Japanese so foreign visitors will not have to panic at the prospect of using a Japanese toilet with buttons. Instructions may not be displayed in Japanese homes but most control panels are made self-explanatory.

As toilets are being upgraded and improved all the time, you may see variations and additional features to the toilets. Who knows whether such toilet design may become a worldwide phenomenon.

Not all toilets in Japan are so high-tech, infact some are quite the opposite. The traditional toilet in Japan is one which requires the user to squat as found in most countries in Asia. You are more likely to come across a public toilet like this than one with lots of buttons.
