One of the fastest trains in the world, the Shinkansen bullet train, recorded an average of 20 seconds delay time in 2006. If a train arrives more than 5 minutes late an announcement of appology is made and a "delay certifacte" is given to the awaiting passengers. Severly delayed trains that are over an hour late can even appear in the newspapers which puts immense pressure on rail workers.
