Logistical issues
How will the link be administered in your school?
- Does it have the support of other staff and the school management?
It is possible for an enthusiastic individual to set up and run a school link, but the co-operation of others can make your life much easier! And is essential for the more ambitious exchange or cross-curricular work.
At the very least, you should choose a substitute in case the main contact teacher falls ill or leaves the school.
- Is there room for PTA involvement?
- Does your school have a student council? Can it be involved?
- What is your budget - of time and money?
- Which pupils will be involved? What year group? How many? When will they work on the link?
The school year starts in April in Japan and September in the UK. A link running over a full academic year may encounter problems as partner pupils change year group or leave the school. Plan for this by involving staff teaching other years or working on the link as a club activity.
