Shino Arisawa studied koto, shamisen and singing with prominent musicians including Seikin II Tomiyama and Koji Kikuhara, who are current head musicians of prestigious ryuha (schools). She currently teaches Japanese music (theory and performance) at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where she obtained her MMus and PhD in Ethnomusicology. Based in London, she has performed many concerts and given workshops across the UK often with colleague musicians to play sankyoku ensemble music for the koto, shamisen and shakuhachi. These occasions include: Japan Embassy UK (2007, 2005), Clare Hall College, Cambridge (2007), University of Sheffield (2006), British Museum (2007, 2006), Bristol Cathedral (2005), Standon Calling Festival (2008), and SOAS World Music Summer School (2007, 2006). Works for the media include Channel 4 "3 Minute Wonder My Dance" (2008).
Shino also founded the SOAS Japanese Music Society in 2004 in order to give students opportunities to learn Japanese traditional instruments koto, shamisen and shakuhachi. She has organised many performances for this group, such as at the City of London Festival (2006), London Open Garden Squares Weekend (2007, 2006, 2005), and sound tracks for a Japanese animation project within Norwich School of Art and Design (2007).
