Japan in your classroom

If you are teaching about Japan, why not bring the country alive for your pupils with a visit from Japanese volunteers living in the UK?

Visits are tailored to your needs and can be a general introduction to Japan, part of a larger project, or designed to fit in with your school's numeracy or literacy programmes.

Japan in Your Classroom visits are free to schools and arranged at a time to suit you and the Japanese volunteers. The programme for the visit varies depending on schools' needs, but may include:

  • introduction to everyday life, at home and at school
  • calligraphy
  • origami
  • learning a few words of Japanese
  • trying on yukata (summer kimono)
  • musical activities
  • soroban (abacus) and numberwork
  • storytelling etc.
To request a visit for your class, please fill out the online visit application form.
Alternatively, if you prefer, visit requests can be made by post using the downloadable application form.

We regret that we are unable to offer JIYC visits in all parts of the UK. As at January 2009, JIYC visits are available in Greater London, Bath, Brighton, Cardiff, Derby & Nottingham and Manchester.
However in most areas you should be able to find someone on the Access to Experts list, who can visit your school to work with pupils.

For visits outside the JIYC areas; if you are organising a large scale Japan day or Japan week; or if you are looking for workshop leaders with a specific expertise, please see the Access to Experts list.
